How it works

Hair grows in a cycle of three stages: anagen (growth), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting). The Venus Velocity™ laser uses technology to target the hair follicle in the anagen phase, which is when the hair responds best to the treatment. About 30% of hair is in this phase at any given time, which is why you need multiple treatments to see results. The Venus Velocity™ diode laser works by delivering energy to the hair follicle, where it’s absorbed by the hair pigment. This destroys the follicle so that the hair cannot grow anymore, resulting in permanent hair reduction.

HOW DOES A DIODE LASER WORK

Diode lasers work by delivering a high level of energy into the skin, where it is absorbed by the melanin that surrounds the hair follicle. It doesn’t harm the tissue surrounding the hair follicle, which makes diode laser hair removal a good choice for unwanted fuzz growth. This type of laser is safe for all skin types.

Fast Treatments

Remove unwanted hair in less time than traditional treatments, even for large areas of the body.

COMFORTABLE FOR ALL SKIN TONES

Treatments are safe for all skin tones, even tanned skin. The advanced cooling system of the diode laser hair removal machine works on contact to ensure your skin is always protected, so you can enjoy a more comfortable treatment.

How to prepare for your Laser Hair Removal

STAYING OUT OF THE SUN

Follow your laser technician advice for avoiding sun exposure before and after treatment. Whenever you go out, apply a broad-spectrum. SPF 30 sunscreen.

LIGHTENING YOUR SKIN

Avoid any sunless skin creams that darken your skin.

AVOIDING OTHER HAIR REMOVAL METHODS

Such as aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs, to avoid before the procedure.

AVOIDING BLOOD THINNING MEDICATIONS

We need at minimum an ⅛” of an inch of hair to wax; ideally, a ¼” to ½” of growth. How can you gauge how long that is? Typically, about 2 weeks from the last time you shaved. If it’s longer than that leave it alone. We can weed-whack it once you get here if it’s out of control. If you try to groom the area before coming in, you might make it too short to wax or we’ll have to go over the area repeatedly to pick up the really short stray hairs. This is no fun for you.

SHAVING THE AREA

Shaving is recommended the day before laser treatment. It removes hair above the skin that can result in surface skin damage from burnt hairs, but it leaves the hair shaft intact below the surface.

During your Laser appointment

The laser technician will press a hand-held laser instrument to your skin. Depending on the type of laser, a cooling device on the tip of the instrument or a cool gel might be used to protect your skin and lessen the risk of side effects.

When the laser technician activates the laser, the laser beam will pass through your skin to the hair follicles. The intense heat from the laser beam damages the hair follicles, which inhibits hair growth. You might feel discomfort, such as a warm pinprick, and you’ll likely feel a sensation of cold from the cooling device or gel.

Treating a small area, such as the upper lip, might take only a few minutes. Treating a larger area, such as the back, might take more than an 30 minutes.

Post-Laser Care

CONSISTENCY PAYS OFF

You might notice redness and swelling for the first few hours after laser hair removal.
To reduce any discomfort, apply ice to the treated area. If you have a skin reaction immediately after laser hair removal, the doctor might apply a steroid cream to the affected area.

After laser hair removal and between scheduled treatments, avoid sunlight and don’t use a tanning bed for six weeks or as directed by your doctor. Use a broad-spectrum SPF30 sunscreen daily.

The Results

Hairs do not fall out immediately, but you will shed them over a period of days to weeks. This may look like continued hair growth. The repeated treatments are usually necessary because hair growth and loss naturally occur in a cycle, and laser treatment works best with hair follicles in the new-growth stage.

Results vary significantly and are difficult to predict. Most people experience hair removal that lasts several months, and it might last for years. But laser hair removal doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. When hair regrows, it’s usually finer and lighter in colour.

You might need maintenance laser treatments for long-term hair reduction.

Laser hair Removal FAQs

Our laser experts answer your most pressing questions

Laser hair removal is a procedure to remove unwanted hair on your body. It’s noninvasive, which means it doesn’t require any cuts in your skin. People may get this treatment on any part of their body, but the most common areas are:

  • Face.

  • Underarms.

  • Bikini area, or any areas that grow pubic hair.

  • Back.

  • Legs.

Laser hair removal uses a process called selective photothermolysis. Heat from a laser destroys cells that have a lot of pigment (color). Since dark hair has a lot of pigment, it absorbs the most heat. Hair transfers heat to the hair follicles and destroys them, so hair can’t grow.

A hair follicle has to be in its anagen, or growth, stage for the procedure to work. Follicles are in different stages at different times, so most people need multiple laser treatments.

Anyone with extra body hair can have laser hair removal. It’s usually a cosmetic procedure. It may improve your appearance or self-image. Many people also prefer not having to shave regularly.

Talk to your healthcare provider before having laser hair removal. You may need to avoid the procedure if you:

  • Are pregnant.

  • Are taking certain medications, such as acne treatments.

  • Have genital herpes (HSV-2) or are prone to cold sores.

  • Have keloid scars (raised scars).

  • Have or have had skin cancer.

Your skin might be red, swollen and a little painful after laser hair removal. You can use a cold compress on the treated area. Don’t expose the treated area to natural or artificial sunlight. You should be able to go back to normal activities right away.

Laser hair removal is usually safe and effective for most people. Only an experienced healthcare provider should perform the procedure.

You’ll likely need anywhere from six to eight laser hair removal treatments. Sessions are usually about six to eight weeks apart. This timing helps capture more hairs in different growth phases.

Laser hair removal isn’t permanent. It’s unlikely that treatments will target all the hairs in their growth phase. Some hair will grow back, but it’s usually lighter and thinner than before.
